From Zouk Beginner Hell to Zouk Lead Heaven: My Journey in Brazil

Learning Brazilian Zouk in São Paulo isn’t just about mastering steps—it’s a journey through rejection, self-doubt, and unexpected breakthroughs. This is the story of how I went from feeling invisible at socials to becoming a confident lead, and the two friends who helped me get there.
I had what most people would call a dream life—full-time remote job selling complex software, great income, freedom to travel the world. I could explore architecture, art, mountains, Michelin-star meals, and fine wine whenever I wanted.
And yet… after a decade, it all felt normal. Empty. My life coach once asked me, “What sparks joy for you?” and for months, I had no answer.
That changed the night I first danced Brazilian Zouk. It was like stepping into Narnia—a sensorial, otherworldly experience unlike anything I’d felt before. I knew I had to chase it. I bought a one-way ticket to Brazil in October 2023, determined to become a great lead.
But reality hit hard.
At São Paulo’s socials, everyone seemed like a professional. I was a near-total beginner, and it showed. People avoided me, refused dances, or ended the dance early. My nights were filled with sitting alone, comparing myself to the best, and beating myself up. Asking someone to dance took every ounce of courage—often helped along by a drink just to calm my nerves.
It wasn’t just technically hard. It was emotionally brutal. The plastered smiles, the moments of disconnect, stepping on feet, feeling shame rise in my chest like a fever. Every dance felt like: “I’m bad, and you know it—let’s just get through this.”
I might have quit if not for two people: Danny and Gab. I met them on my very first day in São Paulo, and they became my lifeline.
They listened to my complaints, shared their own struggles, and reminded me that my journey was normal—that Zouk tests everyone. They were there after my first Jack & Jill win, and after the countless losses. They checked on me when I drank too much, encouraged me when I felt like giving up, and celebrated every small breakthrough.
Their message to me was simple:
- Struggle is part of the path—don’t run from it.
- Ask for help—don’t suffer in silence.
- Stay in the game—your time will come.
Now, I’m a confident lead. I love Zouk with my whole heart—talking about it, studying it, teaching it. My hope is that my blog, my videos, and Zouk Refúgio can be that same lifeline for you.
